Abstract

Experiments were carried out with wethers to know palatability and digestibility of silage from high moisture rice straw threshed immediately after cut, in comparison with ordinary air dried rice straw from the same field. Results are as follows:

  1. Average daily intake of dry matter from silage was 318.9g, and that from air dried straw was 223.3g.

  2. Per cent digestibility of each component of both silage and air dried straw was, crude protein: 13.5, 11.6, crude fat: 39.6, 24.2, NFE: 5.1, 57.8, crude fiber: 51.8, 55.3 and dry matter: 47.5, 48.2: and TDN was 43.4 and 43.5 per cent, respectively.

  3. It may be concluded that the high palatability of silage increased intake of nutrients, and apparently enhances utility value of rice straw.
