Abstract

Population development and increased awareness of environmental improvement are limiting the use of burning as a method to dispose of rice straw. As a consequence, California rice producers are actively seeking alternative uses for rice straw. This review is intended to provide background information for exploration of rice straw as a livestock feed. It is divided into four sections: summary, composition, digestibility and feeding trials. Acknowledgment is given to the California Cooperative Rice Research Foundation for a grant supporting this review; to W.C. Weir, Professor of Animal Science and M.D. Miller, Extension Agronomist, for their efforts in initiating the report; and to Miss Jerry Lynn Bader, a graduate student who reviewed much of the literature.
