Abstract

Louisiana like many of its neighboring southern state is an area with a deficit of grains and high quality roughages but has a surplus of protein concentrates. However, Louisiana is unlike some of these other states in that there is produced within its borders each year an abundance of so-called low grade roughages which, if wisely handled and properly supplemented with the necessary protein, minerals, and vitamins, will supply the beef cattleman with a satisfactory and economical wintering ration for his breeding herd. One such roughage in this group that may be utilized in such a ration is rice straw. Animal husbandry research workers at the LSU Agricultural Experiment Station conducted a feeding trial in 1953-54 for a 154-day period in which a comparison of the feeding value of four native grown Louisiana roughages, ground sugar cane bagasse, grass hay, rice straw and cottonseed hulls was made.
