Abstract

Stone and Webster to Lead Feasibility Study Stone & Webster Engineering Corp., along with seven project partners, will prepare a feasibility study for the economical conversion of waste rice straw to ethanol, power and chemicals in the Sacramento Valley near Gridley, California. Pilot plant studies will be conducted at the U.S. Department of Energy's National Renewable Energy Lab (NREL) in Golden Colorado, to demonstrate the technology.

The low-cost ethanol conversion process converts waste to transportation fuels using a variety of raw materials including waste paper.

It is being offered by SWAN Biomass Co., jointly owned by Stone & Webster and Amoco Corp. and is based on extensive research and development activities conducted by Amoco, NREL, Iogen Corp, Purdue University and others. SWAN biomass is continuing to develop and commercialize the process for widespread application in both the public and private sectors.

Stone and Webster was selected on manage this project by the City of Gridley, NREL and the U.S. Department of Energy based on its unique qualifications and its extensive experience in process engineering. Project execution began in February, with completion scheduled for July, 1997.
