Abstract

Acid hydrolysis of sugar cane bagasse with steam at 220°C and 1 percent sulfuric acid was a better pretreatment procedure compared to a low temperature hydrolysis at 90°C and use of 5 percent sulfuric acid. Aside from a high sugar yield of 52.7g/100g bagasse, the acid hydrolyzate using steam at high temperature was readily fermentable by Pachysolen tannophilus with a lag time of 0.5 day after an ether prewash. The hydrolyzate prepared by a low temperature treatment gave a low yield of 19g sugar per 100g bagasse and a lag period of 3 days when used as substrate for fermentation.
