Abstract
Pretreatment by stream-explosion at 29kg/cm2 (231°C) for 1.5 min made both bagasse and rice straw most effective for enzymatic hydrolysis by cellulase. Pretreated under the same conditions, bagasse was easier to saccharify than rice straw, and steam-exploded bagasse could be converted into 65 g/l ethanol (ethanol yield: 75.6%) by yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Ethanol yield was proportional to the ratio of cellulascholocellulose of the substrate up to 20% (celluloase-substrate ratio: 87 FPU/g). Above the ration of 20%, the increasing rate of ethanol yield became less.
