Abstract

Alcohol from Rice Straw

A pilot plant to produce alcohol from rice straw is proposed to be set up at the Indian Institute of Technology, New Delhi with financial assistance from the UNDP and Department of Science and Technology.

The UNDP has agreed to help with Rs. 3 crore project to produce 1000 litres of alcohol a day. The IIT has developed an enzyme for enzymatic hydrolysis of cellulosic material and this will be applied to produce alcohol from rice straw.
