Abstract
Saccharification with dilute acid in the autoclave, or with enzyme cellulase, was done on coconut residue 'sapal', rice straw, rice hulls, sugarcane bagasse, corn cobs and sawdust. Material-to-sugar conversion of 26.3% and reducing sugar levels of close to 12% with approximately 70% of the sugars as hexoses, were obtained for sapal after acid treatment under optimal conditions. Lower saccharification values, sugar levels and hexose contents were observed for the other materials using acid or enzyme.
Hydrolysis of coconut residue 'sapal' with dilute sulfuric acid followed by neutralization with lime gave practical alcohol levels at high fermentation efficiencies. Acid hydrolyzates from the other materials gave low alcohol levels and fermentation efficiencies Enzyme hydrolyzates from rice hulls after passing through an anion exchanger and from sugarcane bagasse also gave high hexose fermentation values.
