Abstract

Energy from biomass has always been vital to Man's existence and prosperity on this planet, and recent technological advances mean that this will continue into the future. This article describes the mechanism for biomass productivity in its various forms and goes on to cover the range of conversion technologies available to produce more convenient and higher quality fuels for utilization by Man. Emphasis is placed on the energy situation in developing counties where biomass often continues to be the main fuel supply. Consideration is also given to the potential environmental impacts, both beneficial and detrimental, as a result of the implementation of some of the more likely biomass energy options, including the large-scale production of liquid fuels.
