Abstract
This paper deals with the engineering design and startup of a small power station in El Nido, California. The fuels to be fired at this facility include a variety of straws, cotton stalks, and orchard prunings. Most of these fuels have low bulk densities and high ash contents which makes their handling and combustion relatively difficult. High concentrations of alkaline earths in the fuels promote low temperature softening of the ash resulting in a potential for rapid fouling of the boiler tube metal surfaces.
Pilot testing of the various fuels preparatory to full-scale design is addressed including emissions of various criteria pollutants. Design of the full-scale power plant with modifications necessitated for proper combustion of the fuels at low temperatures is described. Plant startup problems and projected long term maintenance and availability may be found in the body of this paper.
This facility is the first of three similarly fueled small power plants designed by EPI for startup in late 1988 and 1989 and shows the commitment to continued advancement in Atmospheric Fluid Bed Technology.
