Abstract

The study could be carried out only for short periods. However, following inferences might be drawn from the observations collected so far:

  1. Rice straw can be used in mixture with bagasse in a refined sugar plant having horse shoe type furnace.

  2. A tonne of rice straw at medium to high moisture content can replace about 0.6 tonne of bagasse at 50% moisture content.

  3. Uniform chopping of rice straw in large quantities is a problem. Long straw is difficult to mix with bagasse and tends to choke the star feeder.

  4. The use of baled straw as fuel appears to be more trouble free and convenient. However, a bale conveyor and an appropriate feeding mechanism are required to feed the baled straw in large quantities to the furnace.
