Abstract

Potentiality of different agricultural and animal wastes were determined for their ability to be used as substrate for biogas production. Agricultural wastes were water hyacinth, banana trash, soybean wastes and sunflower wastes and animal wastes are cattle dung, sheep manure, silkworm waste, piggery waste and poultry waste. The study showed that animal wastes with the exception of cattle dung had more dry matter when compared to plant waste materials. Nitrogen content in all the animal waste were relatively more than the plant waste except in the case of soybean waste. The studies on biogas production using different wastes showed that piggery waste gave the highest amount of biogas per 2 liter of slurry, which was more than 2.5 times higher than the cattle dung. The plant waste in combination with cattle dung yielded considerable amount of combustible gas. Soybean waste at 1:1 and 1:3 proportion with cattle dung and sunflower waste at 1:3 proportion with cattle dung produced gas on per with control cattle dung alone.
