Abstract
Summary California's estimated output of residues from field crops, vegetables, and fruits and nuts during a typical recent year-1973-was 10 million tons Table 1 summarizes the tonnages of residue produced in each of the 11 air basins in California (See maps for locations of basins. Table 1 shows that more than 80 percent of all the state's crop residues are produced in the Sacramento and San Joaquin valleys. The major portion (73 percent) comes from field crops. To put crop residues in context with other residues of similar composition, logging and sawmill wastes and animal manure are included in Table 1. Table 5 provides county-by-county summaries. The basic information of this report is contained in Tables 2, 3 and 4 which break down the information according to type of crop. These acreage and tonnage figures indicate that four crops-barley, corn, cotton, and rice-are the major sources of crop residues in California, accounting for nearly half of the total. This report includes only major California crop residues that can most easily be picked up and handled. Residues from such crops as lettuce and sugar beets are not included for that reason.
