Abstract
California-Big news from California! Through the efforts of Noel Emerson Rollins, of the Royal Corporation in Colorado, the first publicity funded "Rice Straw-Bale Sound Wall" project has been awarded from the California Environmental Protection Agency, the Integrated Waste Management Board, and the California Department of Transportation. This award constitutes the first effort by a public agency to finance a prototypical straw Sound Wall. These walls may eventually spread all along the highways of California. Rice straw is a waste product in California that has annually been burned. Now new regulations are limiting the burning of the fields and uses must be found for the waste straw. This constitutes an excellent use of straw because of its sound absorption capabilities, low cost and ready availability. This project may have major implications around the country, as other agencies see the advantages of the system. This may lead to better understanding and acceptance of straw-bale building techniques, including in the building construction realm.
