Abstract

Holocelluloses of bagasse and rice straw were prepared from the extractive-free plant material by the aceticacid-sodium chlorine method Hemicelluloses were obtained from these holocelluloses by extraction with 10% sodium hydroxide solution. The isolated rice straw hemicelluloses contained a high proportion of ash which was removed by purification through copper-complex formation. Pentoses constituted 70% of this purified rice straw hemicellulose compared to 80% in case of purified bagasse hemicellulose. It was found that hemicellulose fraction A is richer in pentoses than fraction B.

Analyses of individual sugars showed that all isolated hemicellulose fractions contain xylose, arabinose and glucose. Galactose was found only in the B fraction. Quantitative determination of the sugars in the acid hydrolyzated of the different hemicellulose fractions showed that xylose predominated.
