Abstract

Conclusions

  1. These preliminary results are encouraging. They indicate that cell yields of up to 0.45g cell/g cellulose utilized and cell growth rates of 0.45 hr-1 are possible.

  2. The key problem is to optimize cell productivity and cell yield yet obtain a reasonable cellulose utilization. High growth rate must be maintained if a high cell yield is to be achieved.

  3. In a typical 5% cellulose fermentation by Thermoactinomyces both glucose and oxygen limited growth may be encountered. These may or may not be coincidental.
