Abstract

We have isolated an actinomycete which have cellulolytic activity from rice straw compost. Its taxonomic study revealed that was a new streptomyces species. We named it Streptomyces cellulochyseos. Fujii. Cultivation of this bacterium was carried out with Avicel, hard wood kraft pulp, bagasse, rice straw and news print as carbon sources. These cellulosic materials were digested 5 to 30 per cent in a week by this organism, and yielded respective amounts of single cell protein.
