Abstract

A commercial round baler produces a 1.2m x 1.5m (4' x5') bale was modified and tested in rice straw. Large tires, a swinging axle, split bale chamber, hydraulic header lift, and header mounted windrow crowder wheels were added to improve baler mobility in soft, wet fields and operator control over baler functions. Vehicle cone index was reduced from 380kPa to 275 kPa. Cost to bale, roadside, and transport round bales 50km was estimated to be $29-30/t dry weight basis. A proposed 3m (10') diameter bale offers handling advantages, but development work needs to be carried out.
